Community Program June 2004

Community program grows more than 200% in its first year

June 25, 2004

WILLIAMSBURG, Va. – The number of localities participating in the Virginia 2007 Community Program has tripled in 12 months. The program, which has grown from 20 to 60 communities since Governor Mark Warner launched it last June, plays an important role as Virginia prepares for the commemoration of its 400th anniversary in 2007.

William J. Howell, the General Assembly’s Speaker of the House and a member of the Jamestown 2007 Steering Committee, said, "The program has been embraced by citizens throughout the Commonwealth as we prepare for the national and international attention Virginia will receive in 2006 and 2007. It’s gratifying to see Virginians making the most of this opportunity."

Danville became the 60th community to receive official Virginia 2007 community status in late June. Laurie Moran, co-chair of the Danville 2007 Community Program said, "The program not only gives us a chance to build on 400 years of history and heritage, it’s a wonderful way to tie together our many attractions." The current roster of communities and some of their proposed anniversary projects is below.

More than 100 communities across the state are expected to participate in the program. Amy Ritchie, manager of the program, said, "Community leaders realize that 2007 offers a once-in-a-lifetime chance to engage citizens in projects that will provide lasting legacies throughout Virginia. The commemoration is well underway at the grassroots level."

"Community" can be defined as a geographic division, school, neighborhood, heritage or civic group or government organizations. A free video about the program is available on CD or VHS by calling (757) 253-4974. Additional information is available at
www.Jamestown2007.org.

Jamestown 2007, a sub-agency of the Jamestown-Yorktown Foundation, is coordinating efforts to commemorate the 400th anniversary of Jamestown, the first permanent English settlement in the Americas. State, national and international commemorative events begin in spring 2006 and continue into 2008.
