Get Involved, America!

Listen to Virginia Governor Tim Kaine tell you how you get involved in America's 400th Anniversary!

Virginia Tech's College of Agriculture and Life Sciences and its Cooperative Extension Service have created the America's Anniversary Garden program as a way to mark America's 400th Anniversary and encourage people across the Commonwealth to show their pride in Virginia by planting red, white, and blue-themed gardens.

Throughout America, citizens will plant sidewalk containers, city and town entrance corridors, residential lawns, public gardens, and hanging baskets. Don't miss out on this opportunity to be a part of the commemoration and plant your own Anniversary Garden!

Governor Timothy M. Kaine joined dozens of gardeners and volunteers to plant the first official Anniversary Garden supporting America’s 400th Anniversary on January 11, 2006. The garden, planted along Jamestown Road across from Jamestown Settlement, will greet visitors to America’s Historic Triangle as the nation commemorates the 1607 founding of Jamestown.

To find garden designs, plant lists, and a list of participating growers and retailers, please visit the
Virginia America's Anniversary Garden website.

Through the Virginia 2007 Community Program, citizens will have a unique opportunity to spotlight their communities and showcase for the nation how their local culture, heritage and history contributed to  the nation's development. An integral part of America's 400th Anniversary, the Virginia 2007 Community Program is a statewide commemoration of our past, present, and future. Benefits of participation include regional economic development, increased tourism, improved quality of living, and a boost in community pride.

Communities throughout Virginia are actively involved, planning a variety of projects ranging from new museums to hiking trails, historic town squares, monuments, heritage trails, beautification programs, exhibits, student exchange programs, theatrical productions, and the development of videos and publications.

The year 2007 will be a time to remember the founding of Virginia and to highlight our unrivaled heritage, proud achievements and exciting future. This is an exciting time as citizens come together to make our communities a better place to live, work and visit. Together, we can start new traditions, strengthen old customs, increase pride in our heritage, and improve cultural awareness in communities throughout Virginia. To find out what's happening in your community and how to get involved, visit our community projects page.
