The 1807 Jubilee at Jamestown
Imagine this: Revolutionary War veterans actually attended The 1807 Jubilee at Jamestown, traveling over rough roads and through the wilderness to mark the occasion. The five-day event was hosted by citizens of Norfolk, Portsmouth, Petersburg, Williamsburg, and other outlying communities. Festivities included a regatta of sailing vessels, a parade, and oratory by students at the College of William and Mary.
Jamestown Anniversary of 1857
Former President John Tyler gave the oration, and more than 8,000 people were drawn to Jamestown to commemorate its 250th anniversary. Visitors came by ships and steamers to participate in the multi-day event. Highlights included a flotilla and a military parade that included 16 militia companies. Overnight cabins, a refreshment "saloon," and a dining hall accommodating 500 people were erected to handle the crowd. A dinner, Grand Ball and fireworks rounded out the celebration. |
